Tell most children you're going to be talking about physics, and you'll hear groans. Tell them that they're going to play with balls, and you'll hear the cheers. So, let them play with the balls and they'll learn about the physics painlessly.

This is no ordinary book of nonfiction. Heather Tekavec, who has written both playful picture books (e.g., Arnold the Super-ish Hero) and books of nonfiction (e.g., Same? Different?), always leads with playfulness, and This is How a Ball Rolls has that same whimsy of text, with art by Suharu Ogawa, to lighten the science basis of how different balls work.

For each type of ball, and Heather Tekavec covers everything from a marble to a tennis ball, a bowling ball and a beach ball, she teases readers with a hint to the type of ball she'll be highlighting in the following double-spread. By doing so, she gets young readers interacting with the text, guessing what the ball will be. For example, before her focus on the marble (see illustration above), she writes,
There is a little ball–
A teeny ball–
A glossy, smooth and swirly ball...
The next pages include a five-line poem filled with appropriate verbs and adjectives for that ball–for the marble, words like "clinking,""plinking," and "trading" are used–and then an information box about the type of ball. Information included may deal with how the ball is used in play, the composition of the balls, and even the physics of wind resistance. (Heather Tekavec extends this information in a section called "The Science of (Wobbling, Bouncing, Spinning) Balls" with discussions about the sphere, elasticity, aerodynamics, gravity, trajectory, drag force and speed along with some fun trivia.

This is How a Ball Rolls is anything but boring science. It's playful and colourful and yet informative. It's even more so because of Suharu Ogawa's digital artwork that is as colourful as the balls which she depicts. The brightness of her art is only secondary to the diversity of her characters and the fun that they have in their play. Because she has to represent each type of ball in the scenes in which it would be used, be it a yoga studio, a beach, or a bowling alley, Suharu Ogawa makes every illustration rich in quirky details to draw the young reader's smile and interest. (I'm especially curious about the animated knitted duck head (?) and ball of yarn.)

I know the audience for This is How a Ball Rolls is listed as five to eight years of age so it would work well with Grade 3 students studying forces, but I'd also use it with older students too. They'll appreciate the fun and the interactive nature of the book, but they'll also take away a lot of science that they can apply to new situations.
Moreover, they'll never look at any ball again as just a play thing. It will be recognized as much more, and they'll have a ball sharing what they've learned. (Pun intended.)

The field of quantum physics would seem a challenging STEM topic for adults, much less for children. But one thing Chris Ferrie does very well is distilling down complex scientific ideas into manageable bites and he does the same for quantum physics with his latest in the early reader series called Brainy Science Readers. With clear and concise text and illustrations, and analogies between balls and parts of an atom, Chris Ferrie introduces young readers to atoms, electrons, neutrons, protons, energy, and quanta.

STEM books tend to be either extensive middle-grade non-fiction texts or picture books that embed a scientific concept within. Do You Know Quantum Physics? is very different in that it is an early reader devoted to the concept of the quantum theory of the atom at its heart. The illustrations carry the message, but the words are dedicated to explaining what an atom and its component particles are and how electrons gain or lose energy. The vocabulary is appropriate for beginning readers and the repetition of words helps highlight key ideas. Moreover, the digitally-rendered artwork by Chris Ferrie and Lindsay Dale-Scott always matches the text directly, allowing for improved retention of the ideas. Chris Ferrie has not wrapped the learning in a story of a little electron looking for its friends or home. It's just the science of how things work. Because of that, it hits the mark.

The Brainy Science series aims to "improve reading skills while immersing children into scientific theory." (pg. 1) And while quantum physics may not be on many, if any, pre-school through Grade 2 curricula, Do You Know Quantum Physics?, with its simplicity of text, ball analogy and bold illustrations, will be a fabulous introduction to the atom.

There are poems about geology, structures, life cycles, chemistry at work, seasons, magnetism, brain waves, senses, botany, force and differentiating between living and non-living things. It's the primary curriculum plus in a fun package of poetry and dynamic illustrations by Peggy Collins. And everyone is doing science: girls, boys, monsters, armadillos, physically-challenged individuals, kids with braces, kids with glasses, and kids of all hues and abilities.  It's science learning at its best and most lively.
She's hungry for science.

who'd guess that she's eight?
It's the manner in which the concepts are shared that makes Hungry for Science so entertaining. The life cycle of a flea in "An Ode to Flea" details the birth and death of Little Miss Pesky Flea who

a doggone long and itchy life!
Captain Chemistry helps unclog a sink drain with an all-purpose cleaner of baking soda and vinegar, and Scary Miss Mary shares how her odd garden of "carnivorous snappers and large creepy wrappers and that stinky, zombie-faced rose" grows.

With a glossary and descriptions of the concepts taught in each poem, Kari-Lynn Winters and Lori Sherritt-Fleming complete Hungry for Science with the expository text perfect for a book on science. Peggy Collins, who also illustrated Kari-Lynn Winters and Lori Sherritt-Fleming's earlier STEM picture book, Hungry for Math: Poems to Munch On (Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2015), ensures the lightness and brightness of tone is reinforced in her artwork, adding quirky creative details like a rainbow of plumes from the primary sense organs and an evil below-ground carrot in Scary Miss Mary's garden.
