A little bit about the book from publisher DCB Young Readers:
Enjoy your Final Days.

Escape a Natural Death with us.

Come to Zalmon’s Quiet End.

In the city of Zalmon, every Life Event is predetermined: where you’ll work, who you’ll marry, when you’ll die.

On a tour of Central Processing, seventeen-year-old Darius inadvertently unveils shocking information about his beloved little sister, Mahlah. His impulsive reaction may make him a target of the sinister people who run Zalmon, and could doom Mahlah to a worse fate than the one Darius uncovered.

Defying an unjust system, an unwanted Life Match, and an uncontrollable enemy, Darius fights to save Mahlah, leading him to expose a conspiracy at the heart of the city — and a potential life of autonomy, dignity, and love beyond what the Book of Zalmon dictates.

If White Lies, Sara de Waard's debut novel is any indication, lovers of dystopian YA are sure to find a great read in Defy.

🌑🌑🌑🌑🌑

From the author's website, here is a bit about The Heir of Ariad

The Skies seem a strange place to die of thirst. But four years of drought and twenty beneath the phantom king who designed it have brought all of Ariad–even the Rain Realm–to its knees.

Kyrian would be proud to die among Skyads. The weight of a vanished father's legacy and the secrets of the past have forced him to carve a place among his people at the price of his own sweat and blood. Ariad is withering, and Kyrian knows it. But no one can fetch the Rains against the tyrant's will, and no one but the Creator who has vanished into legend can kill an invisible king.

But there are forces at work beyond Kyrian's sight. A powerful, masterful Will.

Suddenly, there is blood on his hands. The Skies are filled with enemies, and the only way to escape a dark end is to flee the clouds forever. But there in the Lands waits a powerful prophecy, along with a powerful weapon, and now as Ariad withers to dust, all hope may rest with the one young mortal who fled his home a fugitive, and must return to it a king.

From Annick Press's website:
Who says dogs can’t fly?

Meet Zora: a dog with a big dream and an even bigger personality. All Zora wants to do is learn how to fly so she can catch that pesky squirrel in her yard. But try as she might to prove to her friend Tully —a skeptical cat—that dogs truly can fly, nothing seems to work. Until Zora finds the right motivation, that is.

Kathy Stinson’s charming story of perseverance is beautifully brought to life by Brandon James Scott’s exuberant and wonderfully expressive illustrations. Touching on themes of optimism and determination in the face of failure, The Dog Who Wanted to Fly is a book anyone—even a cat—will love.

If that glorious cover doesn't get you interested, then this blurb about the book, from Dundurn's website, will be sure to entice:

A fatal collision — who’s to blame? Two bodies, two souls switch in search of justice.

When fifteen-year-old Hallie gets knocked flying by a Hurricane SUV, her life ends without her ever having kissed a boy. At an otherworldly carnival, she meets and argues with the eighty-two-year-old driver, Susan. Both return to life, only with one catch — they’ve swapped bodies.

Now Hallie has wrinkled skin and achy joints while Susan deals with a forehead zit and a crush on a guy who’s a player. Hallie faces a life in a long-term care residence. Susan gets picked up for shoplifting.

As they struggle with technology, medications, and each other’s fashion foibles, they start to understand and maybe even like each other. But can they work together to prove that a defect in the Hurricane caused the deadly crash? Or will their time run out?

Because it's a special anniversary for the Eden Mills Writers' Festival, we'll be doing something a little different in the Young Adult Authors' venue this year.  Instead of just having readings by the authors, we'll be holding two panels, each with three authors. In each panel, the authors will read from their most recent books, discuss their writing and answer questions including those vetted from the audience.

19 Cedar Street

the new home of the Eden Mills Writers' Festival

in the village of Eden Mills, Ontario

Art preview:  7-8 p.m.
Live auction begins: 8 p.m.
Silent auction throughout the evening

Authors who have read at the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival were invited to ‘think outside the book’ and create a small piece of art to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Festival’s new home, Rivermead.

The auction includes the artwork of more than 30 Canadian authors and illustrators (I've highlighted those of youngCanLit) including:

Bidders will not know the identity of the art’s creator until the big reveal at the end of the evening, so part of the fun will be trying to detect which author created which piece of art!

In addition there will be
two pieces by friends of the festival,
Barb Minett and Cheryl Ruddock,
and
a 1st edition book of poetry by Margaret Atwood
accompanied by a signed, numbered relief print,
hand cut by Ms. Atwood
(donated by Kim Lang, Artistic Director of Eden Mills Writers' Festival)

A silent auction of quality items for books lovers
will also take place throughout the evening.

Tickets which are $20 per person
(and include a complimentary drink and hors d’oeuvres)
are available online at emwftix.ca
or
at The Bookshelf  at 41 Quebec St., Guelph.
